Baby Bird Season Advice from Belize Bird Rescue
April 6 2025
It's baby season again and many of our native and migratory birds are busy building nests and raising their young. Here at Belize Bird Rescue we are gearing up for our busiest months when many of our rescues come into the facility.
We are so grateful to our rescuers, the majority of which are caring members of the public who see a bird in need and truly want to help. If you come across a bird that seems to be in trouble, contact us at Belize Bird Rescue via text, phone, or WhatsApp at 610 0400 and we can guide you on the most appropriate steps to take, or arrange for the bird to receive the care it needs.
It’s common to see a young bird on the ground as they take that perilous first flight from the nest. Usually, they just need more time to learn to fly. Younger chicks may need to be placed back into their nest, but some may be weak or injured and need our help. Talking to you and seeing your photos and videos really helps us to understand each situation.
Please don’t try to feed or raise birds yourself. It’s a very specialised job and if it’s not done correctly the bird may die or be damaged for life. It’s also illegal to keep any wild bird in captivity, and that includes all of our parrot species.
Check carefully for nests before you chop trees, bushes and grasses. If you do accidentally damage a nest site, contact us as we may be able to find a solution using a makeshift nest. You can create a bird-friendly yard by keeping pets indoors or limiting their movements, especially early morning and late evening when birds are most active. Provide fresh water for the birds, and attract them by planting fruit trees and flowers.
As you go about your day, take a moment to appreciate the birdlife around you, and remember, just a quick message or call to Belize Bird Rescue at 610 0400 can make a world of difference for a bird in need.
Let’s work together to ensure that our feathered friends thrive. Happy birdwatching and thank you for protecting our incredible avian inhabitants!
